Get to know Trauma Surgeon Dr. Franz Yanagawa, who serves patients throughout the State of New Jersey.

A highly trained trauma surgeon, Dr. Yanagawa is affiliated with St. Joseph’s Health, working with patients at both St. Joseph’s University Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital in New Jersey.

Pertaining to his educational pursuits, he earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2010, before completing his residency in general surgery at the WellSpan York Hospital in 2015. He then went on to complete his fellowship in surgical critical care at St. Luke’s Hospital in 2016, followed by an additional fellowship in acute care surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2017.

Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in both general surgery and surgical critical care through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to provide board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of surgery.

Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that utilizes both operative and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries, typically in an acute setting. Trauma surgeons generally complete residency training in general surgery and often fellowship training in trauma or surgical critical care. Also called critical care and acute care surgeons, trauma surgeons specialize in performing emergency surgeries on people who have had a critical injury or illness. 

Speaking multiple languages, Dr. Yanagawa is fluent in English, French, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
