My daughter speaks very loudly, should we visit a speech-language pathologist?
Hi! When children speak loudly, it is sometimes as a result of them not hearing themselves efficiently. Have you had her hearing assessed by an audiologist or an ENT? READ MORE
My daughter is unable to express her speech clearly. What should I do?
Hi! My quick answer is this: when in doubt, have her assessed by an SLP. At the age of 3, she should easily be able to verbally express herself in a manner that is organized and clear, and if she isn’t, the question is, why? The best way to help her is by getting her assessed by an SLP. The earlier you do, the faster her recovery and her rate of learning will be. The longer you wait and the older she gets, the longer her rate of recovery will be. It is great that you are seeing this issue and are asking questions. Now, all you have to do is take the next step and get her evaluated. I hope that this helped! Have a great day! READ MORE
My son has delayed speech. Should I take him to a speech language pathologist?
Hi! By the age of three - a little one should be able to speak in complete sentences and when they do not, we have to ask ourselves, why? What is preventing him from sounding and communicating like everyone else his age? I would most definitely refer him to an SLP. Neuroplasticity is highest in the 0-3 population - the younger they are, the easier and faster it is to treat them. The older they are the more challenging it is and frustration due to their lack of being understood increases. Follow your instincts - get him assessed now. Have a wonderful day. READ MORE
My son was born with slight hearing loss. Will he have a speech problem as well?
Hi! By the age of two, a child should be speaking and have at least 250 words. It sounds like he may have a speech issue. Have you gotten him assessed yet and if not, I truly believe you should. It is great that you to caught this issue early. I would suggest that you get him assessed by an SLP for sure. Also what is being done for his hearing? What kind of hearing loss is it- sensorineural (life long) or conductive (temporary)? That issue needs to be addressed as well through your audiologist. Hope that helped. Have a great day! READ MORE
Is there a cure for stuttering?
I would reach out to our governing body at ASHA (American Speech and Hearing Association) and see if you can find a clinician who focuses on Dysfluencies/Stuttering. You don’t want him to go to just any clinician. But in the right hands, he can be given strategies to help him in dysfluently challenging times. In the wrong hands it will feel like a waste of time and money. But there are SLP’s who are specialists - who can help him see a difference fairly quickly. He can be helped! I pray that this was helpful! READ MORE
