Get to know Anesthesiologist Dr. Michael DiCioccio, who serves patients in Akron, Ohio.

As a board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. DiCioccio’s areas of expertise include anesthesiology, critical care medicine, and pain medicine. He is currently in practice with Cleveland Clinic Akron General in Akron, Ohio. 

Founded in 1914 as Peoples Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Akron General is a not-for-profit healthcare organization that serves as the hub for Cleveland Clinic’s Southern Region. Its mission is to improve the health and lives of the people and communities it serves. Cleveland Clinic Akron General is now ranked as the No. 1 hospital in the Akron Metropolitan Area, according to U.S. News & World Report. 

In regard to his educational background, Dr. DiCoccio earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He then went on to complete his residency in anesthesiology at University Hospitals of Cleveland, followed by his fellowship in critical care medicine at the same educational venue. 

After his training, he earned board certification in both anesthesiology and critical care medicine through the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the mission of the ABA is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. 

Additionally, the doctor earned board certification in pain medicine through the American Board of Pain Medicine (ABPM). The mission of the ABPM is to improve the quality of pain medicine.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature, anesthesiologists also measure the patient’s respiration.
