Get to know Gynecologic Oncologist Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, who serves patients in Memphis, Tennessee.

A prominent gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Kumar is in practice at Poplar Avenue Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee. His areas of clinical expertise include cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, pelvic masses and tumors, and vulvar &  vaginal cancers.

Originally from India, he received his medical degree from the Government Medical College in 2003. Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 2006, and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Wayne State University in 2010. Returning to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, he completed his fellowship in gynecologic oncology in 2013.

As a testament of his continued education, the doctor is board-certified in obstetrics & gynecology, and gynecologic oncology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

Gynecologic oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer. A gynecologic oncologist is a physician who specializes in treating women with reproductive tract cancers. They are initially trained as obstetrician/gynecologists and then undergo three to possibly more than five years of specialized education in all the effective forms of treatment for gynecologic cancers (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and experimental treatments) as well as the biology and pathology of gynecologic cancers.

On a more personal note, Dr. Kumar is fluent in both English and Hindi.
