Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Steven P. Kalter, who serves patients in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Kalter is a medical oncologist and hematologist in private practice in San Antonio, Texas with the START Center for Cancer Care.

The mission of the START Center for Cancer Care is to provide the highest-quality care for people with cancer, and help accelerate the development of new treatments in order to improve patients’ quality of life and give them real hope against cancer. In pursuit of this mission, the START Center provides world-class care, with multiple convenient locations in San Antonio and across the globe.

Composed of a large team of caring, dedicated cancer doctors, the START Center combines excellent people, state-of-the-art capabilities, and the most advanced treatments available. It brings together multiple cancer-care specialties and modalities — surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, integrative therapies, genetic testing of tumors — for thorough and efficient care. 

A graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Kalter completed his residency in internal medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He then pursued his fellowship in medical oncology at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, and his fellowship in hematology at Baylor College of Medicine. 

Following his training, he attained board certification in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.

Among his various accolades, Dr. Kalter has been the recipient of Patients’ Choice Award (2018, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2018, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009), and Patients’ Choice 5th Anniversary Award (2012).

On a more personal note, he speaks both English and Spanish.
