Dr. Samuel W. Cox is a 3rd generation podiatric physician and foot and ankle surgeon who has been in private practice since 1992 and serving the Goodyear, Arizona area since 2007 with Arizona Foot & Ankle Specialists, LLC. Dr. Cox has a unique background in that he graduated medical school and did as well-rounded podiatry medical and surgical residency program, then started practice in the family practice in Atlanta, GA.  He worked there for 11 years, when he decided to get more advanced training, so he moved to Arizona and completed a 3 year Podiatric Medical and Surgical advanced residency training program.  He loves the area so much he stayed in the West Valley area and has built Arizona Foot & Ankle Specialists, LLC into a leading center for podiatric medical and surgical treatments of the foot, ankle, and lower leg.  Dr. Cox is a double board-certified physician with the American Board of Foot & Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.  He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, American Society of Podiatric Surgeons, American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons, American Professional Wound Care Association, and the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management.

  • What kind of anesthesia do they use for ankle surgery?

    Most ankle surgery is done in a Hospital or Surgery Center under general anesthesia with local anesthesia injected into the surgical area after the patient has undergone general anesthesia. Depending on the procedure the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist could choose to use MAC sedation/IV sedation or some people call a twilight sleep for the surgery, the patient is still asleep but their organs are all functioning normally, a MAC sedation is generally not as deep of anesthesia as general anesthesia. Longer procedures require general anesthesia, MAC sedation is for procedures less than 90 minutes. I hope that helps. READ MORE

  • How long does an ankle injury take to heal?

    Completely depends on the level or severity of the ankle sprain. In general most ankle sprains will start feeling better and functional in 6 to 8 weeks, however the tissues really take 12 weeks to heal. More severe ankle sprains or ligament ruptures will take longer and may even require surgical correction or repair. READ MORE

  • How long does pain last after broken ankle surgery?

    This completely depends on the severity of the fracture and the extent of the surgery. General guidelines would be pain would lessen after the first 3 to 5 days. Some patients do not need any pain medication after a week however some patients need pain medication for 2-3 weeks, there are a lot of factors that play into how long it will painful post ankle surgery repair. In general it takes bone 6 to 8 weeks to repair or heal, so there could be soreness anytime during that period of time all the way up to 12 weeks. READ MORE

  • What type of anesthesia is used for toenail surgery?

    We will use a half-and-half mixture of local anesthetic including lidocaine and Marcaine, if the patient's toenail is infected sometimes we will use sodium bicarbonate to help the local anesthetic effectiveness by changing the pH in the area. READ MORE

    Absolutely, that is one of the most common conditions we treat. We perform a simple procedure in the office that solves the problem permanently and we only remove a portion of the involved nail. READ MORE

    Call your doctor's office for clarification. My patients redress their toes daily after nail surgery. You should follow your doctor's instructions and if you don't know them or can't understand, then be sure to call for clarification. READ MORE

  • How can I relieve my ankle pain?

    This is really no way for me to answer this question simply, because there is a number of different causes to ankle pain. It could be caused by arthritis of the ankle joint or another joint nearby, it could be due to prior injury and/or instability, and could even be due to foot position and poor shoe gear and lack of support, just to name a couple. My recommendation is to be seen by foot and ankle expert who can fully assess your foot and ankle condition to determine the causes of the ankle joint pain. There is no way to just say how to get rid of it without knowing what is the underlying cause. READ MORE

  • Should I go to the doctor for a dislocated ankle?

    Absolutely yes, I would recommend not putting any weight on the ankle until it is examined by a podiatrist. Until then you can use ice 20 minutes out of every hour, elevation, and an Ace wrap. I wish you all the best. READ MORE
