Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Jay Boughanem, who serves patients in Hilo, Hawaii.

Dr. Boughanem is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon at Hawaii Shoulder & Orthopedic Institute, providing shoulder and general orthopedic surgery on Hawai’i Island.

“I provide patient-centered, evidence-based operative and nonoperative musculoskeletal care, while paying special attention to minimizing discomfort and pain associated with musculoskeletal trauma” expressed the doctor.

His key services include comprehensive orthopedic care, as well as general orthopedic surgery and orthopedic trauma surgery, including periarticular fractures, long bone fractures, nonunion/malunion correction, joint reconstruction for fracture care, fracture management, and shoulder reconstruction for fracture care.

Among his academic appointments, Dr. Boughanem serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine of the University of Hawaii.

His hospital / clinic affiliations include Queen’s North Hawai’i Community Hospital, Hawai’i Shoulder Orthopedic Institute, Straub Medical Center, Hilo Community Surgery Center, and Hilo Medical Center.

A graduate of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Dr. Boughanem went on to perform his residency in orthopedic surgery at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. He also completed his fellowships in shoulder surgery and sports medicine at Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts & at Osaka Medical College in Japan.

With expertise in a wide variety of advanced techniques and procedures, he is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Holding fellowship status, Dr. Boughanem is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (FAAOS).

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

An authority in his field, Dr. Boughanem has been the recipient of various awards and honors, including Patients’ Choice Award (2018, 2017, 2015, 2013), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2018, 2017, 2015, 2013), Top 10 Doctor – State (2014), and On-Time Doctor Award (2018).
