Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist and Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist Dr. Veronica Gonzalez-Brown, who serves patients in Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Dr. Gonzalez-Brown is a highly trained obstetrician-gynecologist and maternal-fetal medicine specialist practicing at Brooke Army Medical Center. She specializes in high-risk pregnancy care, and has advanced expertise in ultrasound evaluation of the developing baby. 

Brooke Army Medical Center is the United States Army’s premier medical institution located on Fort Sam Houston. It is a 425-bed Academic Medical Center, as well as the Department of Defense’s largest facility and only Level 1 Trauma Center.

Before the start of her career, Dr. Gonzalez-Brown graduated with her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1999. She served her internship at the University of Oklahoma, her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Keesler Medical Center, and her fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Since 2008, she has been serving as an Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Prior to her current endeavours, she served as the OB/GYN Medical Director at Aviano Medical Center (2005 – 2008), the Division Chief of the Outpatient Clinic at San Antonio Military Medical Center (2010 – 2012), the OB/Gyn Clinic Chief/Flight Commander at Lakenheath Medical Center (2012 – 2015), the Chief Medical Officer at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (2015 – 2017), and a Clinical Professor at The Ohio State University (2017 – 2020). 

Among her professional affiliations, Dr. Gonzalez-Brown is a member of the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Medical Association, and the American Medical Women’s Association.

Committed to patient-centered care, she is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts). An obstetrician-gynecologist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders that affect women, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and menopause. Additionally, they work with expecting mothers throughout their pregnancies, during childbirth, and into postpartum. 

Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) is a branch of medicine that focuses on managing health concerns of the mother and fetus prior to, during, and shortly after pregnancy. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are physicians who subspecialize within the field of obstetrics. For pregnant women with chronic health problems, MFM specialists work to keep them as healthy as possible while their bodies go through changes. They also care for women who face unexpected problems that develop during pregnancy such as early labor, bleeding or high blood pressure. 

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Gonzalez-Brown enjoys reading, traveling, and cooking. Her favorite place to vacation is in Italy, and her favorite professional publications are the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Journal of Perinatology.
