His acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from Addis Ababa University Faculty of Medicine in 1980. He then went on to perform his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in medical oncology at Howard University Hospital in 1992 and 1995, respectively. 

With over forty years of experience in his field, Dr. Tesfazion is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
