Dr. Jim Robinson's Expert Contributions
  • My son's hands are trembling. Could it be a neurological problem?

It could be something completely benign and not a worry, but could be a sign of a neurologic condition. He should be evaluated by a child neurologist. READ MORE

  • What causes gelastic seizures in a person?

These seizures emanate from deep within the brain. They can be caused by a tumor, usually benign, but can also occur without evidence of a tumor. An MRI scan will let you know if there is a tumor or not. If there is a tumor, surgery to remove it, or Gamma Knife treatment, or "LIT" therapy can be used to treat it. LIT is laser light treatment used through a fiber inserted into the tumor that heats the tissue to kill it. READ MORE

  • Is pituitary adenoma life-threatening?

Pituitary adenoma are very benign tumors. However, you must pay attention to it and be cared for by someone with a specialty interest in the area. Often, pituitary adenomas require surgery eventually, but some can be treated with medication without the need for surgery. If they are small, we often will follow them and they do not require surgery immediately. Adenomas that make extra hormones can be life-threatening because of hormone excess. In addition to the MRI, hormone labs are needed as part of the assessment. Vision problems are common due to pressure on the optic nerves. READ MORE

  • Can venous aneurysm cause headache?

It is difficult to say without seeing your scan. The abnormalities seen could be a result of something else associated with it that may cause headache. It would be best to see a neurosurgeon who specializes in neuro-vascular surgery at a stroke center. READ MORE

  • My baby's head size is big. Is it due to any abnormality?

That typically would be evaluated by your pediatrician. It is possible for water on the brain or other abnormalities inside the head to cause the head size to be abnormally large. It is also possible that the child just has a large head but on the inside things appear normal. READ MORE

  • Can a back injury cause neurological defects?

Yes, that is absolutely possible. It is very important that you have that evaluated by a medical doctor. READ MORE

  • Can back pain cause headaches?

Often, back and neck problems cause muscle spasms that generalize into the head, causing headaches. If it is not improving, you should see a doctor for it. READ MORE

  • My sister lost her vision due to an accident. Is it possible to get the vision back?

When vision loss goes to the point of the person not being able to perceive light in the eye, we consider it impossible for it to recover. If there is any light perception remaining, there may be a possibility of improving. Certainly, she needs to be closely followed by a physician and appropriate diagnostic studies need to be performed. READ MORE

  • What is a coma?

"Coma" refers to someone who is unconscious. There are different levels of coming out, and many reasons for it. READ MORE

  • Can a blood clot in the brain be removed by medicines alone?

A “blood clot“ could be a number of different things. A blood clot outside the brain will generally not benefit from medication and may require surgery. The same could be said of a blood clot within the tissue of the brain. A blood clot inside of a blood vessel is a common source of stroke by limiting blood supply to the brain. Most often that is treated with medication, and sometimes by advanced therapies that are directed through a catheter that goes up into the arteries to put medication directly in the area of the blood clot in the blood vessel, or even to grasp the clot and remove it. • Can kids suffer from vertigo?

Vertigo occurs for a number of different reasons. That can span from something like a viral infection, to a brain tumor, two other problems. Yes, children can get vertigo. It needs to be evaluated by an ear doctor. READ MORE

  • How is MS in older people managed?

I do not prescribe medication for multiple sclerosis myself, but would recommend that your father be seen at a center for multiple sclerosis treatment. I do imagine that the patient’s age has some influence over choices and medication management. There has been a lot of activity in multiple sclerosis treatment and there are multiple options. READ MORE

  • Can amniocentesis cause brain damage in a baby?

I have never seen a case of that happening. READ MORE

  • Can vertigo be treated?

You should see an ear doctor and have this assessed. It is likely that they will order an MRI scan. It is possible to have symptoms from a tumor that could be the cause, although it may well be from something else. READ MORE

  • Can lower back pain lead to paralysis?

It is rare, but not impossible for a lower back problem that initially presents with pain to result in paralysis. You should definitely have it evaluated if it has failed to improve with therapy. Radiating pain or numbness or weakness in one or both legs would definitely be a sign of worsening and should prompt immediate attention. READ MORE

  • Are all tumors cancerous?

No, not all brain tumors are cancerous. There are many many different types of tumors. Many are benign. The MRI scan is helpful, although we never know what type of tumor we are dealing with until we have a piece of it to examine in the pathology lab. Some things that are read as a tumor turn out even to be inflammation, or something other than tumor. It would be best for him to see Someone like me who specializes in brain tumors for a consultation. A biopsy or removal of the tumor may be the best thing, or depending on what it looks like, it may be safe to watch it and do follow-up scans. I wish you the best, Jim READ MORE
