His medical training was at the Medical College of Virginia, where he graduated under a military scholarship in 1980. His first postgraduate studies were in pathology, and he completed his residency in 1984 with board certification the same year.
After serving a year in Korea as a staff pathologist, he was accepted for a two-year fellowship in nuclear medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He remained at Walter Reed for three years as a staff nuclear medicine specialist, with an academic appointment as an Assistant Professor in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
An expert in his field, the doctor is board-certified in nuclear medicine by the American Board of Nuclear Medicine, which certifies physicians as specialists in the practice of nuclear medicine.
To boot, he is board-certified in pathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath).
