Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Jose Wilis Mejia, who serves patients in Texas.

A proven cardiologist, Dr. Mejia has over 33 years of diverse experience, with over two decades dedicated to his medical practice. He recognizes the gravity of his field of expertise but approaches it with a unique blend of professionalism and personability, often infused with a touch of humor. His philosophy is encapsulated by his favorite quote: “The internist’s operating room is the patient bedside exam.”

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo in 1985, followed by internships and residencies in Internal Medicine at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and Miriam Hospital. He further honed his expertise with a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at Louisiana State University Health in 1997.

Passionate about his profession, Dr.Mejia is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Holding membership status, he is an active member of several associations including the Travis County Medical Society and the Louisiana State University, demonstrating his commitment to staying engaged in his field and contributing to medical advancements. 

In recognition of his exceptional patient care, he received the Patients’ Choice Award in 2009 and 2010, which is a symbol of the trust and gratitude of those he serves. 

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).

On a more personal note, Dr. Mejia enjoys playing tennis, engaging in outdoor activities, and embarking on adventures through travel. Moreover, he is fluent in both English and Spanish.
