Elizabeth Robinson's Expert Contributions
How often should I take my child to speech therapy classes?
Since vowels are part of every word, mispronouncing them can really impact his speech clarity. Depending on the age of your son, I would say 2-3x week is a typical frequency for speech therapy. If he is under 2, you may wait a few more months to see if it resolves with home practice. Practice animal sounds, read books and give him lots of examples of correct pronunciations. Our kids are always watching what we do! READ MORE
I’m pretty sure I have a tic disorder?
This doesn't seem like a speech therapy related issue but definitely something that needs to be addressed. I would discuss it with a school guidance counselor and consider calling your doctor's office and asking to speak with the nurse or leave a message. You can express your concerns over the phone that you may not feel comfortable doing in person with your mom. I hope that helps! READ MORE
What causes puberphonia in some kids?
My understanding is that puberphonia can have some underlying emotional or psychogenic causes, but I've also heard of cases where that just doesn't seem to be the issue. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a hormone imbalance such as low testosterone. Don't quote me on that! You would be an excellent candidate for voice therapy from a certified speech-language pathologist. You may look in your area for an SLP that works with adults or check out my page at www.teletn.com if you live in TN or AL. READ MORE
Do I have dysphonia?
Your first step would be to see an ENT (Otolaryngologist/Ear, Nose, Throat) doctor. That would help us rule out any underlying cause. The ENT can refer you for voice therapy with a speech-language pathologist. You may look in your area for an SLP that works with adults or check out my page at www.teletn.com if you live in TN or AL. Is there a cure for stuttering?
A person who stutters, will always stutter, but can learn strategies to smooth the speech to a point where the average listener doesn't even realize that a stuttering event occurred. There are tricks that SLPs teach to reduce the stuttering events and pull out of them easily when they occur. Your husband would be an excellent candidate for speech therapy from a certified speech-language pathologist. Can teeth issues cause difficulty speaking?
I would have to actually hear you speak and have more details, but it is possible to have trouble speaking if there is pain or swelling associated with the gum disease. You may discuss it with your dentist and primary care doctor. If the root cause can not be corrected, you may consider speech therapy to learn strategies to improve your articulation. My daughter has somewhat of a his when she talks. How can it be corrected?
It is not too early for speech therapy. Honestly, the younger we work with kids, the easier it is to correct. Otherwise, the misarticulation becomes a habit. Your daughter would be an excellent candidate for speech therapy from a certified speech-language pathologist. You may look in your area for an SLP that works with kids or check out my page at www.teletn.com if you live in TN or AL. READ MORE
My voice is extremely low. What can I do to enhance it?
It depends on what is causing the issues. It may be neurological or respiratory related. Or you may just be soft spoken if it has been a lifelong issue. You would be an excellent candidate for voice therapy from a certified speech-language pathologist. You may look in your area for an SLP that works with adults or check out my page at www.teletn.com if you live in TN or AL. READ MORE

My daughter talks with a lisp. Can this be corrected?
Definitely! And the younger she receives therapy, the easier it will be for her to correct the lisp. We can create misarticulation habits with our speech that need to be addressed during childhood if at all possible. She would be an excellent candidate for speech therapy from a certified speech-language pathologist. Will my mother regain her speech after her stroke?
She will see the most rapid recovery in the first few months following her stroke but can continue to make progress years post-stroke. It may not get back to 100%, but it will improve with therapy. She would be an excellent candidate for speech therapy from a certified speech-language pathologist.
