Can speech therapy help my stutter?
Thank you for reaching out. Speech/language therapy can definitely help you learn strategies to manage your specific type of stutter because every person who has a stutter stutters differently - but there should be some "mental health"/talk about feelings with your stutter incorporated into each session as well. Some people want to eliminate their stutter, or lessen it, and some people want to learn how to be OK that they stutter and learn how to teach others what a stutter is and that's just part of who you are. And some people want both. Every SLP is different in how they approach stuttering. You just need to find one that fits what you want, but you can definitely get some guidance. Good luck! READ MORE
Why is my 4 year old son still unable to speak fluently?
Hello, thanks for reaching out. Without seeing your son in person to do an evaluation, this is hard to answer. Maybe his brain is moving faster than his mouth. Maybe he's in the middle of a language leap. Maybe he has a stutter. In any case, model slow speech, focus on his message vs how he is saying it, and reach out to an SLP to get an evaluation if you continue to be concerned. READ MORE

A committed speech-language pathologist, Emily is the Owner of Above and Beyond Speech Therapy, LLC - a private practice providing quality in-person speech/language evaluations, therapy, and consultation for children ages 3 and older in State College, Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas. She is also able to provide teletherapy to any children living in the state of Pennsylvania.

Throughout the years, she has provided evidence-based speech/language evaluations and therapy for clients who have autism, Down syndrome, Intellectual Disability, speech/articulation disorders, receptive and/or expressive language disorders, social language needs, and stuttering needs. She maximizes a child’s speech and language abilities to reach their full potential.
She specializes in working with children with complex communication needs (CCNs) who need Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). No matter the child, she will work with them and their family to advance strengths, address needs, and find an effective communication system for them.
Her own son went through early intervention speech therapy so she knows the challenges and struggles. But she also knows the pride and joy that fills a family when a child progresses above and beyond what they ever thought possible.
Before opening Above and Beyond Speech Therapy, LCC, Emily worked as a speech language pathologist with school-aged children in the State College Area School District for over a decade. She graduated from Penn State with her Bachelor of Science degree in 2006 and her Master of Science degree in 2008, majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD).
She has her speech therapy teaching certificate through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), her PA state speech therapy license, the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and a number of ACES awards from ASHA because of her extra continuing education credits.
A member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Emily truly believes that the child teaches her as much as she teaches them.
Speech-language pathology is a field of expertise practiced by a clinician known as a speech-language pathologist (SLP) or a speech therapist. SLPs treat and diagnose speaking disabilities. They help patients with articulation, stuttering, fluency, the rhythm of speech, and more. Additionally, they may treat patients who have difficulty with language and social skills. Patients see SLPs for a variety of reasons, including relearning language after an accident, overcoming a voice disorder, enhancing social communication skills, as well as improving speaking clarity.
On a more personal note, Emily is a wife and mother to a school-aged son, a cat, a ball python, a crested gecko, and whatever else her husband brings home. She loves PiYo, P90X, being outside, and milk chocolate.
