Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Athar, who serves patients throughout the State of New Jersey.

Dr. Athar is a board-eligible orthopedic surgeon who is dual fellowship-trained in hip and knee reconstruction, with emphasis on total hip and total knee replacement, and foot & ankle surgery. He currently sees patients at Genesis Orthopedic and Spine, with offices in Westfield and West Orange, New Jersey.

In his clinical role, he treats most conditions involving hips, knees, ankles, and feet. This includes the surgical treatment of hip arthritis, knee arthritis, meniscal tears, ankle arthritis, cartilage injuries, foot deformity, bunions, toe deformity, diabetic foot complications, and fractures involving upper/lower extremities. He also is involved in the non-operative treatment of these conditions, which can include braces, orthotics, medications, and injections.

Furthermore, Dr. Athar has extensive experience working with workers compensation cases, at risk populations, and with college / university teams. He is certified for navigation/robotics assisted hip and knee replacements, and is also trained in patient specific ankle replacement, minimally invasive foot surgery, and the use of newer cartilage replacement techniques.

With a broad educational background, he received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and attended medical school at University College Cork in Ireland. He then went on to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in affiliation with the University of Toronto, before completing two fellowships at the University of Toronto in hip and knee reconstruction, and foot & ankle surgery.

An active member of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, Dr. Athar is involved in peer reviewed research with a special interest in total ankle replacement. He has presented at conferences at the national level in both the US and Canada.
