Former Head of PBS and NBC News Dies at 86 from Parkinson's and Throat Cancer
Grossman went on to revolutionize NBC news
Just a few months later, Grossman quit PBS and joined NBC news. He was hired to deal with challenges in the news programming. Ratings for The Today Show were rapidly decreasing, NBC Nightly News ranked behind CBS Evening News, and the NBC network was trying to launch a prime-time news magazine.
At the time Grant Tinker, the chairman of NBC did not seem to even care that Lawrence Grossman did not have a journalism foundation. Tinker only believed in Grossman's abilities as a communicator.
After taking over, Mr. Grossman said to the New York Times that he was not going to try and make NBC News first in the rating game, but first in news programming and a proud organization.
