Can Fish Oil and Vitamin D Ease Lupus Symptoms?

What are fish oils?

Fish oils contain omega-3 fatty acids plus vitamins D and A. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils protect the heart and do offer other health benefits (some scientists don't agree with these ideas).  Herring, anchovies, salmon, trout, and mackerel are the fish that contain the best omega-3 fatty oils.

  • The health benefits of omega-3 oils are varied, but studies believe that omega-3s will help with lupus as well as multiple sclerosis due to its protective effects on the nervous system and brain. Fish oils in addition to a low-fat diet may also reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Omega-3 fish oils have been suggested to help those with behavioral problems like ADHD, and omega-3 fatty acids can help improve working memory in young adults.
  • Omega-3 fish oils appear to soothe atherosclerotic lesions and help with heart and cardiovascular health. In the Canadian journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, researchers reported that consumption of DHA or omega-3 protects older patients from age-related vision loss. Those who experience epilepsy seizures may experience a reduction in problems if they ate of omega-3 fish oil daily.
