What is Internal Medicine?

Internal medicine is the medical specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Internists are physicians who are specialized in internal medicine. They have intensive and comprehensive training in all aspects of adult medical care.

Treating Complex Conditions. Internists treat patients who have complex conditions such as diabetes. If diabetes is not managed properly, it can cause complicated health issues with disorders of multiple organs. There is often an overlap between diabetes and other health conditions such as elevated cholesterol and hypertension

Consulting Other Specialists. An internist is typically a gatekeeper, they keep a close eye on a patient’s body systems and help manage recurring conditions and diseases. Internists will consult with doctors in other fields of medicine, or may be asked to consult on a patient by another specialist.

Managing Chronic Conditions. Internists are trained in adult medical care, and chronic conditions tend to present themselves as we age. Many of the patients suffering from chronic conditions are geriatric patients. Internists treat chronic conditions including COPD, elevated cholesterol, heart disease, kidney issues, and endocrine issues.
