Some may think that liposuction is only for women, but the American Society of Plastic Surgery reports this procedure is at the top of the list for men, too.

As liposuction procedures have gotten more advanced and affordable, men have decided to do something about fat in their midsection, chest, flanks, and other body areas.

If you’re a man and considering liposuction, below is essential information to consider.

Liposuction Overview

There are several types, but the most chosen by men is tumescent liposuction. During this procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions in the target area. Next, they inject a solution of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine to reduce swelling and bleeding.

Then, the surgeon inserts a small cannula into the target area and sucks out the fat and fluid. This procedure requires general anesthesia, but it requires only a week or so of downtime.

Many men like tumescent liposuction because it has an excellent safety record and produces fantastic results with a reasonable recovery time.

Also, some surgeons may use ultrasound liposuction that liquefies the fat before it is removed. This advanced procedure can give the patient a more muscular and defined appearance.

For example, ultrasound liposuction on the abdomen can provide men with that ‘six pack’ they have been dreaming of.

There are other reasons men choose liposuction to change their appearance:

Get Rid Of Belly Fat

If you are a man over 30, you’ve probably struggled with the spare tire in the midsection. As men get older, they tend to accumulate fat in the stomach and flanks. Even with proper diet and exercise, it can be challenging to get rid of extra fat in the abdomen.

Liposuction helps thousands of men eliminate extra belly fat every year, so they have a slimmer, more masculine profile. In addition, your surgeon can remove those last few pounds of fat to make you look years younger and trimmer.

However, men should note that liposuction can do many things, but it only gets rid of some fat directly under the skin. For example, if you have a protruding belly, you probably have fat under the muscle and around the organs.

The only way to eliminate that fat is through diet and exercise. Liposuction is only for getting rid of two or three pounds of subcutaneous fat.

Remove Fat In The Arms And Legs

The midsection isn’t the only area where men store extra fat. Some men may develop fat in the arms, legs, and buttocks that is above the muscle. Liposuction can eliminate fat in those parts of the body to give you a more sculpted and lean appearance.

Men like to have liposuction in these areas because they may have large muscles hidden by a layer of fat.

Increases Perceived Height

When men age and develop fat in the midsection, they may look shorter than they are. Conversely, removing fat from the belly slims the patient and makes him look taller.

There is a desire in American culture for men to be tall, and liposuction can make you stand out even if you’re of average height.

Eliminate Fat In The Breasts

Enlarged male breasts can happen for various reasons. It can be a congenital disability, and sometimes it happens from taking certain drugs, such as steroids. When fat is removed from the male breasts, the procedure is known as gynecomastia.

Whatever the reason, men want to reduce their breasts, so they don’t have a feminine look. Your plastic surgeon can do liposuction on the area to give the chest a more masculine appearance.

Having the chest look more chiseled and defined gives men more self-confidence and less likely to feel self-conscious in tight-fitting clothes or going without a shirt.

Improved Body Image

As for women, men may feel better about their appearance when they have liposuction. Men may need to compete against younger, fitter men in the workplace, and having liposuction can give them an edge.

Also, clothes fit better, and you feel more comfortable wearing your bathing suit. The fact that you’re pleased with your appearance will affect how you see yourself, and more self-confidence is noticeable by others.

Recovery

Men tend not to want to see doctors as much as women, and they may be encouraged to know liposuction has a short recovery time today.

After the procedure, you can expect some soreness, swelling, and bruising. Surgeons usually provide a compression garment to wear to reduce pain and swelling, and this device also ensures that the skin adheres to the new body contours.

Vigorous physical activity should be limited for about two weeks, but daily walks help to speed the healing process.

Outlook

Liposuction is becoming more popular with men every year. This procedure can provide men with a younger, slimmer look that increases self-confidence and enhances their appearance. Talk to your board-certified plastic surgeon about liposuction today.
