This is a question that depends on the MRI findings. Lateralizing symptoms that we call "radicular" are more satisfactorily treated with surgery than central back pain. I would see a spine surgeon. Most are very conservative with back surgery because they know the results are not stellar.

This is called an appendicolith. There is a greater chance that you will get appendicitis but not in and of itself an indication for appendectomy.

On the other hand, a physiatrist is a physician trained in the art of rehabilitation. That physician may not be closely aligned with the goals of your surgeon. You may want to check into this. However, if for some reason, your progress is slower than anticipated, you might want to talk to your surgeon about making a referral to a physiatrist.

I will offer up one concern. Approximately one patient in five, MAY have troubles with post-prandial bowel cramps and diarrhea, an untoward effect which is likely to disturb you. There is however, a remedy. Cholestyramine can put a fix on that issue.

There are many, if not most, surgeons who will not even operate on you for an elective operation, unless you quit. I am one of those surgeons. If it is truly an elective operation whose recovery has been shown to be impacted by tobacco use, I may even ask the patient to do a cotinine saliva test if I suspect they are still smoking.
