Dr. Matson was born in Minnesota, obtained his BS, Magna cum laude at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and his MD from Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota.  He completed a pediatric residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and an Adolescent Medicine fellowship at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
 
He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University and Professor of Pediatrics at The University of Mississippi Medical Center-Pediatrics.  Dr. Matson is a board-certified Pediatrician and is subspecialty boarded in Adolescent Medicine and one of the few pediatricians boarded in Addiction Medicine.  He has practiced Adolescent Medicine for over 30 years.
 
Dr. Matson came to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in 2008 after serving as division chief of Adolescent Medicine at the University of Florida – Jacksonville.  In 2009, he was named director of the Medication Assisted Treatment for Addiction Clinic at Nationwide Children’s Hospital from 2009-2019.  He currently serves as medical director at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center and is past-president of the Ohio Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.  He has published on substance abuse and substance abuse treatment in adolescents and is considered a national expert on this topic.
 
He has a long history of creating community outreach programs to serve youth including school based health centers; detention center clinics, free walk in clinics, clinics for LGBTQ youth and drug abuse treatment programs.  He was the very first recipient of the Founders of Adolescent Health award from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1999.

Do cigarette quitting tablets really work?

The best treatment is Chantix tablets and 24 hour nicotine patched. The gum may help when he is having a stressful moment. Treatment needs to continue for many months

How long does it take suboxene to get out if your system to get out of your system?

It can take 7-10 days if you are using sublingual. Much longer if using subcutaneous buprenorphine

Is there any medication that can help me quit smoking?

Yes Chantix is the best medicine, Zyban is another that can help. Nicotine replacement patches, gum and lozenges all help

How long should I be on nicotine patches to quit smoking?

Well often we do 1 month of each level of patch so at a minimum of three months.

Dependency to opiate vs addiction

When you take opiates regularly you will become tolerant so that if you stop cold turkey you will go into painful withdrawal. This is NOT addiction

They should also be experiencing withdrawal when they haven't used for a while.

Coming off Suboxone or overdosing?

You can never just stop Suboxone. You will go into withdrawal and be very sick. To stop the medicine you need to gradually taper the medication over months of time.

My husband is quitting smoking and is complaining of anxiety and hot flushes. Is it normal?

Yes it is normal nicotine withdrawal. He should be taking Chantix and using Nicotine patched to make him feel better.
