More severe cases require a surgical scaling and root plaining in which the gums need to be reflected back to allow access for the cleaning. This should be completed by a specialist. Certain laser treatments can be provided by appropriately trained individuals as well.
Once dignoswd with periodontitis the patient is always a periodontal patient. The disease is never gone however arrested. Constant follow up is required to maintain teeth as long as possible.
