Understanding Septoplasty: A Solution for Better Breathing
If you struggle with chronic nasal congestion or difficulty breathing through your nose, a deviated septum could be the culprit. Septoplasty is a minor surgical procedure designed to straighten the septum—the thin wall of cartilage and bone that separates your nostrils.
What Is Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a common outpatient surgery that corrects a deviated septum, improving airflow and nasal function. While some people are born with a deviated septum, others develop one due to injury. This procedure can also help treat conditions like chronic sinus infections, nasal polyps, and recurrent nosebleeds.
The Procedure and Recovery
Performed under general or local anesthesia, septoplasty typically takes 30 to 90 minutes. The surgeon makes an incision inside the nose, reshapes the septum, and may insert splints to support healing. Recovery is usually quick, with most people resuming normal activities within a week. Mild discomfort and swelling are common but subside over time.
Benefits and Considerations
Septoplasty significantly improves nasal airflow, reduces snoring, and decreases sinus infections. While complications are rare, risks include bleeding, infection, and temporary numbness. In some cases, additional procedures may be needed if symptoms persist.
If breathing through your nose has been a challenge, consult an ENT specialist to see if septoplasty is right for you.
