Clinical signs and symptoms include episodes of disabling dizziness and vertigo characterized as a spinning sensation with prostration associated sometimes with nausea and emesis. Usually there is associated fluctuation of the hearing with diminished hearing in the associated ear along with loud ringing in the ear and a sensation of ear pressure.
These episodes may last several hours and then dissipate as the fluid pressure is released. Characteristically this is a problem in adults, sometimes secondary to the overproduction or lack of elimination of inner ear fluids. Treatment is usually symptomatic with sedation and antihistamine therapy such as meclizine. Hearing testing is highly recommended and follow up with otolaryngology is also recommended as well.
