Typically a cavity can progress to a point that it damages the nerve and necessitates a root canal in approximately 6-12 months, depending on the oral hygiene condition of the patient. This is why the general rule is to see a dentist at least twice per year for checkups and cleanings, so a cavity does not have a chance to grow that deep. Waiting it out too long is like playing “Russian Roulette”, not a safe bet. Good luck.

Dentures should not hurt. If they are new, not unlike a new pair of shoes, they can cause sore spots. Your dentist can make a quick and easy adjustment to correct that. If they are old, they may be in need of a reline, as the base bone shrinks over time and the fit of the denture shifts, again causing sore spots. In either case, a visit to the dentist can quickly fix your problem.

Absolutely not! Titanium is a very biocompatible material, and in fact one of only 2 metals, the other being zirconium, that actually osseo-integrates, which means it sticks to the bone, and is completely acceptable by the body. So they are very safe to use. In fact, many medical joint prosthetics are made of titanium, and are equally successful. Good luck.

Lemon juice has a pH between 2-3, making it as much as 100 000 times more acidic than water. Even if you dilute it with water, it is still extremely acidic. Acid is the only substance that not only weakens, but destroys enamel. Regular consumption of lemon juice will absolutely weaken your enamel on your teeth. The only way to strengthen them is to apply fluoride, either via toothpaste, or in higher concentration at your dental office. That will make the enamel stronger to resist the acid in lemon juice and other acidic foods. Good luck.

Eventually the decay will progress and the tooth will rot below the gumline. The gum will then grow over top of the tooth and encapsulate it, thereby making it much more difficult to extract, not to mention causing pain and infection/swelling. A non-restorable tooth should be extracted promptly. Good luck.

I have had 6 root canals in the past. I need another one now. Why is this?

Brushing, flossing and routine cleaning are excellent ways of preventing cavities from starting and helping restorations last longer. However, once a cavity begins and a filling is done, especially if it is deep or large, or a tooth is traumatized, the damage to the nerve is irreversible and irreparable, so eventually in one’s life, a root canal becomes necessary. If you have had 6 over a number of years, then it suggests that your past history was that of constantly needing dental treatment. If they are all recent, then one needs to evaluate why your dentist cannot control the rampant condition. Root canals are not an elective procedure, they are done in response to pain symptoms. If you are not getting pain, you should re-evaluate the dentist’s diagnosis. Perhaps a second opinion to put your mind at ease could help. Good luck with your treatment.

Many toddlers and children grind their teeth significantly. It is not normal, but not unusual either. Unfortunately there is not much anyone can do, as a grinding appliance cannot be used as it will hinder jaw development. The teeth will wear prematurely, but hopefully if she loses the habit before the adult teeth start to come in, she may start again on a “clean slate”. Good luck.

Hello,
All fillings have a finite lifespan, so they do need periodic replacement, on average every 8-10 years. However, if there is pain, that is not an indication to replace again, in fact the contrary. If symptoms worsen, that could be indication that the nerve is unable to recover, and hence a root canal could become necessary. Good luck.
