"Is Radiofrequency (RF) a laser?" is one frequent question posed to me at the office, parties, and any social event. The answer: no. In fact, following the last post, RF is a type of skin rejuvenation device that can be used on most individuals as it does not depend on melanin or any pigment target to obtain its result. Again, we must refer to some physics and the light/radiation spectrum that you, the reader, can look up. How I will make it easier for you is that RF is simply a rapid, oscillating electromagnetic energy that generates heat. The best examples are radiofrequency communication and microwaves. Each device with its goal oscillates at a certain frequency called "Hertz" or Hz. It's the frequency that targets its use. It is for this reason that RF may be used in most skin types for skin rejuvenation, fat melting and skin tightening, and coupled with micro-needling. I carry 3 RF devices, Yag, IPL, and Fractionated CO2 laser in my office. If you visit doctormelodyinc on IG or TikTok, you can hear my brief discussion of these modalities in my library. I am a big fan of RF because of my large, varying patient base. Further, the results do work and people give me positive feedback with minimal downtime. The big thing to remember after RF and even laser is to hydrate. I ask patients to drink 1-2 liters of water after treatments. Actually, I advise patients 1-2 liters of water a day anyway. However, with RF, hydration (with water!) helps clear toxins released from the procedure especially with fat melting. So, on that note, until next time. In the interim, not just wear sunscreen, please hydrate with water!
