Adoption is not easy for all involved parties. Congratulations and hooray to you for being so kind to another human being and taking her under your wing, especially considering that she is on the autism spectrum!

It may take some time for both of you and perhaps the whole family to integrate this child into your family. However, being that she is only 5 years old might shorten the adjustment period for her to integrate into your family. I recommend to focus on where she is coming from (what type of environment she was in for the first 5 years of her life if that information is available) and of course work with a trained professional (i.e. psychologist/psychotherapist who specialized in trauma and play therapy).

My foster child is mute?

Speak with the child's pediatrician first. If he/she cannot help the child, they will refer the child to an appropriate practitioner.

Research shows that domestic violence increase during holidays for various reasons, but one of them is that the abuser and the victim are home together. Another reason that it increases during holidays is that perpetrator may be drinking/using drugs so they are under the influence of substances. My guess would be that domestic violence is increasing during quarantine because the abuser and the victim are under one roof for a long period of time. Another reason might be that it is a stressful time and being under stress might contribute to increased drinking/drug use and higher rate of unemployment.

Yes, it's worth it if your passion is to help people feel better. It depends on what you want to do with the social work degree and where you want to work. First step is to identify which population (i.e. age, gender, type of problems) you want to work with. I knew I wanted to be a psychotherapist, and at first I majored in psychology. Later I changed my major because social work had more options than just doing psychotherapy and at that time I thought I might want to do something different with social work degree. However, I ended up loving psychotherapy and that's what I do.

From my experience, play/art therapy works best with children of this age for most mental health related challenges they experience. How much do you know about your child's history prior to adoption? This history might play a crucial role in his/her nightmares as a result of trauma he/she might have experienced, especially if it happened during pre-verbal age. Our bodies keep the score of our past traumatic experience(s).

Hi!

Social workers may specialize working with certain populations or in specific settings that serve their specialty populations. For example, social workers who work at settings that primarily serve veterans may be experts in veterans' benefits. I believe many veterans prefer to reach out for help through veterans' affairs. However, there are also differences in resources by state. In NJ, for example, there is peer support and referral for veterans through Rutgers UBHC Vet to Vet program and there are mental health/substance use supports for veterans provided by different agencies. There is help for homeless or at risk of homelessness vets available by calling 877-4AID-VET (424-3838).
