If you are an Asthmatic for example, and you have a fair idea that the shortness of breath is due to your Asthma, the first step is to use your Asthma medication (inhaler or nebulizer medicine) and see how you respond after 1-2 treatments at home.
Shortness of breath is a symptom with a very broad range of underlying reasons. If it is not as clear as the example provided above, call your physician or 911.
