There may have been a few research studies that suggest certain factors and combinations of factors can increase a person’s chance of being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, but the exact cause is still unknown. Some of the environmental factors include the following: Inherited or genetic predisposition (family history of IBD); immune system abnormalities that cause it to begin attacking itself; and environmental factors (for example, poor diet, poor hygiene, infections, poor air or water quality, and medications).
