Research Reveals Cystic Fibrosis Severity Is Linked to Fungus

These researchers are now studying how the bacterium works

In order to reduce the risk of transmission, new infection control policies have been implemented and adopted across numerous CF units. The researchers involved in the study are now studying the underlying mechanisms of the bacterium and how it is spreading. “Our research should provide a degree of hope: now that we know the extent of the problem and are beginning to understand how the infection spreads, we can start to respond. Our work has already helped inform infection control policies and provides the means to monitor the effectiveness of these,” said Professor Julian Parkhill, a Head of Pathogen Genomics at the Wellcome Trust Sanger institute. Going forward, they are working on developing potential new drugs for targeting the bacterium.
