Make sure they know they have a choice

One way to assist the patient in feeling as if they are maintaining their sense of autonomy is to offer them choices, letting them make some decisions for themselves. So, instead of simply deciding what you both will have for dinner that night, give them some options so they have a little freedom. The same goes for choosing what to wear, what movie to watch, and anything in between. These choices will enable them to express themselves in a manner that they may feel they are losing.
