The Evolution of Cystic Fibrosis Treatments

Nutritional recommendations from 1940 to 1980

1940s

  • “A low-fat, high-protein diet with a liberal allowance of vegetables, fruits and sugar and moderate restriction of starch. Supplementary vitamin A is essential and pancreatin and vitamin B complex are given,” recommended pathologist Dorothy Andersen for CF patients.

1950s

  • Pancreatic enzymes were used to help CF patients absorb necessary nutrients.

1970s

  • A nutritional supplement (including beef serum protein hydrolysate, glucose polymer, and medium chain triglycerides) was proved effective for CF patients.
  • The ‘Allan Diet’ was proved successful for weight gain in CF patients.
  • Acid-resistant enzymes, Creon and Pancrease, were released.
  • A high-saturated fat diet of whole milk, eggs, butter, and animal fats was recommended for weight gain in CF patients.
