Jimmy grew-up knowing that he would require help for the rest of his life. For him, it’s a part of his life and simply an extension of who he is. Jimmy loves his life and despite the challenges that come along with requiring help every day, as well as the astronomical expenses that come along with that help, he would not change a thing.
Like many people who are dealing with SMA and other debilitating diseases, accessing the support systems that have been put in place to relieve some of the economic pressure, is not always easy. This is because of many people like Jimmy are able to work despite their disease or disorder, making too much money to qualify for additional support.
Jimmy knew this all along. He grew-up facing the reality of this disorder and knew of the high cost of caregiving. Knowing this, Jimmy still pursued an education and a career. For over 20 years, the happily married man has worked hard to give himself a sense of independence and cover the cost of his care.
