Why Accessible Air Travel is Essential for Muscular Dystrophy Families
The Muscular Dystrophy Association's efforts for accessible air travel
The Muscular Dystrophy Association or MDA is leading the fight to provide accessible air travel for those who need to go to work, school, vacation, to see a specialty provider or participate in a clinical trial. In 2016 MDA sent out a survey asking about air travel experiences. More than 2000 responses were returned, and the resounding agreement was access to air travel is a challenge for those in the disability community. More than 80% of those with MD rely on a wheelchair; half the wheelchair-bound flyers cannot transfer independently, and damage to wheelchairs is widespread.
