What Therapists Wish You Knew About Therapy

Therapy is NOT a cure

Although therapy is one treatment frequently recommended by healthcare professionals, it should be noted that it is not a cure for mental illness. In fact, this is true for most mental health treatments; no single option can completely eliminate a mental disorder. More often than not, true healing occurs when therapy is used in combination with other treatments, like medications in some cases. Moreover, there is no “one size fits all” treatment course for people afflicted by the same mental disorder. Individual plans have to be tailored to each patient in conjunction with their doctor and therapist.

People often see positive results from medication combined with a specific type of psychotherapy. The different therapy options include: cognitive behavioral therapy, art therapy, family therapy, interpersonal therapy, exposure therapy, and many more. However, just going to these sessions isn’t enough; you have to actively participate to obtain any benefit. Keep an open mind and be honest with your therapist. After all, their sole intent is to help you.
