Are You Being Gaslighted in Your Relationship? Know the Facts.

Taking advantage of insecurities

Another tactic of a gaslighter is to diminish their partner's self-esteem by insulting them, often preying on preexisting insecurities. The natural response of the partner would be to discuss these problems with their loved ones; however, this is contrary to the gaslighter's desires, so they often try to isolate their partner from those who care about them and those who could talk a bit of reason into them, possibly convincing them to leave the gaslighter. Bergen explains this tendency, "they do this because they want to control the narrative. They want to separate these relationships, so they'll cause conflict."
