“Can acupuncture cure cataracts?”
I am a 48 year old male. I want to know if acupuncture can cure cataracts?

Acupuncture is not necessarily a "cure" for anything. There has been improvement in vision over time with acupuncture, but a cure, I am very reluctant to say. Chinese medicine works by fixing imbalances, strengthening the immune system, improving sleep and so on. And by doing so, there is healthy nerve regeneration, hormone level balancing and other body processes that aid in vision repair. If someone is predisposed to cataracts, or has a family history, there may be little acupuncture can do to prevent it. Oftentimes, surgery is warranted, and only your doctor can say for certain how advanced your cataracts are and if they will respond to acupuncture treatment or not.

When treating cataract, an acupuncturist needs to define the underlying pattern that is causing it. The pattern is defined based on the symptom that is experienced by the patient. There are 3 patterns believed to lead to cataracts. The first pattern is built by the weakness of the liver and kidneys. If the liver is healthy, then the eyes have clear vision and vice versa. The second pattern is developed due to a weakness in the spleen. When the spleen function is disturbed, the eyes are impaired to produce clear vision because of lack of nourishment. The third pattern suggests that cataract is caused by the excess heat in the liver. The excess heat is caused by lack of yin, lack of blood or some emotional problem. Excess heat in the liver causes discomfort of the eyes. The acupoints to be stimulated are GV-20, LI-4, LI-11, ST-1, GB-14, BL-2, LV-3, Ex-2, Ex-4, TE-20, SI-19, LI-14, BL-1, BL-2, EX-HN4, GB-20, BL-18, BL-23, ST-36.4
It can be improved with moxibustion.
I have no direct experience with cataracts in the clinic. However, acupuncture does increase circulation and overall health and well being, so definitely worth a shot! But it would take time and consistency.
In my experience, I have not seen Acupuncture cure cataracts.

I wouldn't use the word "cure," but acupuncture and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) can treat and slow, if not stop, the progression of cataracts. The acupuncture points used to help treat cataracts can help clear the visibility of the eye as well as addressing any circulation issues, but the best therapy would come from the synergistic effects of the herbal supplements. Together, they have proven the most effective treatments for cataracts in research. For advanced cases, there is a technique very similar to a surgical approach. Generally speaking, it will
depend on how advanced the condition is and if you have already tried all the mainstream medical approaches as acupuncture is an alternative medicine. Some cataract patients have tried and not found any relief with mainstream medical approaches, but were able to get relief with TCM. Not that I’m aware of. One must stop eating sugar or anything that turns into sugar for sure. That would be helpful.
