Hello,

You are a thirty year old woman who is asking about the safety of Gardisil, which is a vaccine directed at HPV (human papilloma virus). Much information can be obtained online at www.cdc.gov (center for disease control) and click on “vaccine recommendations” or one can do a google search on “gardasil and pregnancy”. This vaccine is recommended for 11 or 12 year olds. Most sexually active people have likely been exposed to HPV. This vaccine can be considered for 27-32 year old people following a discussion with their doctor. The vaccine does protect against new HPV infections but does not treat ongoing infections.

The CDC does not recommend that pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant receive this vaccine. They should wait until the pregnancy has been completed before receiving this vaccine. The vaccine has not been reported to cause complications to either pregnant women or to their babies, however clinical trials have not been done in pregnant women in the older age group.

So I encourage you to have this discussion with your doctor. Following CDC recommendations is the safest way to approach medical treatments.
