“How long should you have pain after dental implant surgery?”
I got a dental implant 6 days ago. It still hurts. How long should you have pain after dental implant surgery?

It could be as little as a few days or a few weeks. Most importantly do not touch or play with the area. If it’s trending a bit better each day it will probably be fine. Go back to your dentist or surgeons for follow up and let them evaluate it . Personally I like to see the patient just to look about two weeks post surgery. You should have some pain for the first 48 hours. If pain persists, have your dentist evaluate the surgical site.
Slight pain and discomfort can last for weeks after implants placement as the soft tissue and bone continues to heal. If pain worsens, make sure to follow up with your dentist.
Dental implant surgery is one of the major surgeries, so it is not uncommon to have pain, soreness, or discomfort. From a level of 1-10, how much pain are you in? Does it get better day by day or is the pain getting worse? Usually, it will take a few weeks to heal and it also depends on your health condition and your oral habits. If the pain is getting worse, you should consult with your surgeon.
Hope this helps.

Post-operative discomfort should be about a week, however if you still have pain that never subsided or got worse, you should report that to your surgeon just to make sure there is no infection. Keep the surgical site clean. Avoid using that side to eat. The gums will be too tender just yet. If you have swelling or redness, you already have inflammation. You can ask your surgeon for an antibacterial prescription mouth rinse to kill bacteria and speed healing. Also, make sure if the pain is not coming from the gum, get a CBCT to make sure the endosseous implant (screw) is not impinging on nerve tissue and to check the condition of the bone around the screw. Never hesitate to call and ask questions with your surgeon. They want you to heal well and should be informed of what you feel. You should be seeing your surgeon in about 2 weeks for stage 2 anyways, but don't wait if the pain doesn't get better.
If the discomfort is accompanied by swelling or even tingling/numbness then your Dr needs to know asap (right away), otherwise anti inflammatory meds warm saline rinses, and nutrition are the normal path.
