Is depression a side effect of your period?

Hormones can affect mood, but not necessarily the main cause of depression.
Hormonal surges and changes can certainly lead to depression, including birth-control medication. It’s important to be assessed by a professional to make sure that the depression is not just related to menstrual cycles.

Certainly that could be plausible in terms of hormonal factors. However, this being said one would have to rule out other psycho-social factors that might be at play
