Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Nephrologist

Polycystic Kidney Disease?

My grandmother (age 75). Labs indicating elevated urea and creatinine. Matching Polycystic Kidney Disease symptoms (Stage 2-4). She has the symptoms of: fatigue, cannot walk, back pain, puffiness and swelling, loss of appetite, hypertension and abdominal swelling. She has had these symptoms for roughly 2.5 weeks. This has also brought on mild depression. I would like your opinion. Another doctor has said this is most likely PKD. She also has Diabetes. And has had episodes of fainting

From your description, she appears to have advanced kidney failure. She needs to see a nephrologist in your local area.
Another consideration of polycystic kidney disease, there is a familial component. There’s other issues that are associated with it, there should be other family members that are associated with it. Diabetic kidney retinopathy and diabetic kidney nephropathy are very reasonable diagnoses. Not polycystic kidney. Now, if the CAT scan showed multiple cystic areas on the CAT scan in the kidney, that’s a different story. You need to check the consistency of the fluid in order to biopsy it in order to make sure that it’s not malignant or benign. There’s still a whole lot more that is needed in order to give that diagnosis. Or I don’t have all of the information or to say that the physician is or is not correct, albeit, I would highly recommend that you go see a nephrologist.
Thank you for your question and I hope that I was able to help. Best wishes, cheers mate.

Be well,

She is not well. The precise diagnosis requires an ultrasound imaging of each kidney. Polycystic Kidney Disease is diagnosed ONLY via ultrasound imaging. And laboratory testing to determine serum creatinine and BUN levels is essential. And urinalysis testing to determine if infection is present.

The symptoms are not from PKD, they are from renal failure (swelling, fatigue). She may be anemic too. Both Diabetes and PKD can cause renal failure, but I bet her kidney disease is worsening from Diabetes & High Blood pressure.
