It is very difficult to determine whether an infection is caused by bacteria on the basis of appearance. However if the eye is cultured, you would determine the drug sensitivity of the organism and treat appropriately. Otherwise you can use shotgun therapy and use a broad spectrum antibiotic and hope you are destroying the organism.
