Hospice and Palliative Care Specialist Questions Hospital-Acquired Infections

What should a caregiver do for a hospitalized patient to prevent infections?

My mother is in the hospital and I have been visiting her everyday. She's in there for pneumonia, and while she is recovering, she has to be there throughout her entire recovery. Is there anything I can do to prevent any infections while her immune system is still weak? I make sure that my hands are washed whenever I visit her, but I feel like I can be a little more cautious.

Hand washing is the most important measure that has shown to reduce infection rates significantly. For our loved ones, whatever we do always feels less. Reach out to the providers at the hospital with your concerns. They will be able to guide you based on the specifics related to your mother's case.
