Psychologist | Psychoanalysis Questions Couple Therapy

Do we need marriage counseling?

I'm 32 and my husband is 35. We've been together for over 10 years, married for 3, and we have a lot of problems in our relationship. Mainly financial issues. What should we do? Can counseling help us with our relationship?

Dear Madam:

Sorry to hear about you and your husband are having a lot of problems in your relationship with each other. It is a long-term relationship, though you have been married only three years. Do you both have any children? Are you both working? Did you have the problems before you got married? Are those the same issues since you got married?

I would definitely suggest you seek marital therapy with a licensed psychologist or a licensed marriage and family therapist.  Financial issues are a major cause of separation and divorce so sooner you address those issues in therapy the better off you are emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. I would recommend that the two of you read together "Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman and "Love is Never Enough" by Dr. Aaron T. Beck and do all the assignments.

Take care,

It sounds like you’re having primarily financial concerns, which can create strife in any relationship and permeate and amplify other issues that are completely unrelated. Therapy is always an option. A financial advisor may also be helpful in your case. Are the primary issues finances and communication? Are your relationship roles and goals well defined and agreed upon? Is your relationship reciprocal? Is intimacy an issue? Your question is very broad. I hope this helps you hone in on identifying your specific issues so you can get the help you need to move forward with less conflict.
Marriage counseling is an essential part of a relationship. Typically, people don’t reach out until their relationship is so broken that usually they’re not able to repair it. Don’t wait for that to happen. It’s important to do the six core exercises in marriage counseling, which includes the financial component in it. You don’t have to go to it for years, it’s something that’s done within 8 to 10 sessions.
Yes, it can help you a lot. Look for a couseling licensed psychologyst in your community.
Marriage counseling is great for any couple. It’s like getting a tune up on a vehicle or oil change. Please do try it.
The simple answer is it could be helpful and worth the effort if both of yiou care enough to try.
