My friend is going to get a kidney transplant soon and he's 34 years old. Do kidney transplants hold any serious risks?

Yes like all surgical procedures there can be serious complications. The good news is the complication rate is low. Life with a kidney transplant is longer than on dialysis and the quality of life is better.
