Surgeon Questions Ankle Surgery

Why is my surgery stitch still not healing?

I had surgery on my ankle following a car accident, but the area of surgical stitches is not healing. What could be causing this delay?

Infection, history of smoking.
Poor blood flow, or obesity.
An infection
Poor circulation or cigarettes are the most common reason.
Great question! Healing time does differ between people, but if you notice no healing taking place or signs of infection developing you should see a doctor promptly. There are many reasons for non-healing wounds, but most common being a retained foreign body such as a stitch or splinter, a deep bone infection such as osteomyelitis, poor circulation such as in peripheral vascular disease, and uncontrolled diabetes. Your doctor should take a look at your wound to determine if healing is delayed or not occurring and if so, he or she should check you for these common culprits.

Thanks for the question, be well!
There are a lot of reasons why it could keep you from healing. It could be your blood sugar or if you smoke that could hinder your healing. You need to talk to your doctor and have your ankle checked out. I wish you well. oledochouse
