What can cause bloodshot eyes?

I noticed in the mirror that my left eye is really bloodshot. Will it go away on its own? What causes bloodshot eyes?

Dry eye, allergies, broken blood vessels, infections. See an ophthalmologist.
Sub conjunctival hemmorhage
It is due to bleeding from torn blood vessels on your eye surface. Usually self limiting. A small bleed clears in days but large clots take weeks to clear. Check for high blood pressure.
