Thyme (the herb) works very well for colds and coughs if mixed into a tea. V-clear by integrative therapeutics is a good choice as well.
Most colds are caused by respiratory viruses that must run their course, so what we call "supportive care" is indicated. Lots of clear liquids to drink, lots of rest. Breathing in warmed/steamed salt water can help loosen the mucus and clear out the nasal passages. Treating a cough is a bit different, as coughs can be caused by a wide variety of things -- and identifying the cause is critical to recommending the proper treatment. Cough suppressants -- liquids that make you stop coughing -- are never indicated for children, especially for toddlers and preschoolers. Consult your pediatrician about the cause of the cough before attempting to identify a treatment.
