“Will a rhinoplasty change the way I breathe through my nose?”
I want to have plastic surgery done to change the appearance of my nose. But will this change the way I breathe from my nose?

Hello. If the rhinoplasty is done properly by a well qualified surgeon, it should not alter your breathing at all. You may also visit my website at DrRoya.com for further information.
This depends entirely on the patient’s anatomy. If the patient has a deviated septum and this is not addressed during the surgery, there may be a postoperative reduction in the amount of airflow through the nose. Therefore, if a patient has a deviated septum, they should be addressed at the time of surgery. Sometimes patients have structures called turbinates which are enlarged. If so, these may need to be shrunken by laser. If the patient has a normal and adequate airway before surgery, then breathing issues after surgery are rare. But there are a few cases where the smaller nose is somewhat tighter than the larger wider preoperative nose.
This is a really good question that everyone who is considering rhinoplasty (Nose job) should consider. When surgery is being done around a structure that serves a function such as the nose extreme care needs to be done not to affect that function. In case of a rhinoplasty it can absolutely affect the way you breath. However, when done correctly, rhinoplasty typically can make your breathing better. I recommend seeking the advice of a surgeon who specialized in functional and cosmetic surgery of the nose. This way you can ensure that your breathing will not be negatively impacted.
Oftentimes this requires surgery on the septal cartilage which separates the nostrils. Other aspects of a rhinoplasty can also improve your breathing.
Post surgical scarring from rhinoplasty can sometimes interfere with the nasal air passages, but this is not very common. In fact, a rhinoplasty can be combined with a septoplasty or turbinectomy to actually open up the nasal air passages and alleviate an obstructed airway, allowing you to breathe much easier.
It won’t unless you have issues then it should improve your breathing. Important to discuss with your board certified plastic surgeon.
If you are having breathing difficulty now, a well performed rhinoplasty should improve matters and if your breathing is normal a well performed rhinoplasty shoul not change the status quo after the swelling has receded. Notice my emphasis on “ well performed “. Rhinoplasty is a very demanding operation, so be SURE you are in very experienced hands and that your surgeon is Board Certified to perform the surgery. You do not want to end up on “ Botched “.

Typically breathing following your rhinoplasty well be temporarily diminished due to normal postoperative swelling. That type of swelling does resolve after period of time. Please discuss this issue with prospective what certified plastic surgeons with him you will consult!
Probably improve nasal breathing. Depends on your internal nasal valve opening and septal cartilage positioning now.
The changes in the appearance of the nose, done through a rhinoplasty, should not change the function of the nose, particularly breathing.

If you go to an experienced rhinoplastic surgeon, they will evaluate your breathing at the same time they look at the cosmetic issues you have. If you have structural issues, a well trained surgeon will be able to fix them at the same time, so you breathing should not be an issue.

Usually, when correcting the shape and alignment of your nose, there is improvement in function as well. The nasal septum typically has to be re-aligned for symmetry and thereby improves breathing overall.
