  • What should I say to my son's school about his gluten allergy?

Dear concerned mom, It is good that your son's teachers are aware of his situation but there isn't much they need to do other than ensure he is not offered or given any foods that you do not send with him to school. Examples include but are not limited to snacks, Bday celebrations of other students with cupcakes, etc. Since gluten sensitivity does not result in anaphylaxis and there is no indication for EPi device or Benadryl the administration does not need to have any medications for your child on hand. He should be aware of not accepting food from anyone and only eat the food you send for him and should he have any symptoms then seek the teacher's attention and be taken to the school nurse. • Why do I have swelling in my mouth after having pink eye?

Not completely certain they are related but certainly can be. Sometimes after an infection the immune system is activated and can cause certainly symptoms such as swelling. It will be subside with time but it does not then certainly see your physician. READ MORE

  • What are the best ways to prevent hand, foot, and mouth disease?

Unfortunately HFMD is caused by a virus so there is nothing one can do to fully prevent it. it is quite contagious so children by their nature of touching everything are particularly susceptible. Things to consider are good hand washing, not sending the kids to school when they appear mildly ill or are febrile, good diet and adequate sleep will also help to keep the immune system strong. • Treating allergies?

Dear sir, sorry you are struggling with congestion. There are some other medications - oral and other sprays - that can be considered but I advise you see an allergist since they can be contraindicated with your other co- morbidities. In terms of alternative therapies I cannot comment as that is not my area of expertise. READ MORE

  • Is lactose intolerance a lifelong condition?

Unfortunately we cannot predict the path a food allergy or a sensitivity can take over the patient's life. Some are outgrown or resolve with time (usually years) other's persist. Given the pt's age there is a chance that may resolve with time so monitoring on a yearly basis will be able to determine is changes are occurring. READ MORE

  • My mom is not reacting well to allergy medicine?

There are plenty of other allergy medications that can be tried. You should have a formal consultation with an allergist who can make proper recommendations READ MORE

  • How effective are immune booster supplements?

I really cannot comment on such preparations as there are so many of them. I can only say that statements on supplements and "boosters" are not FDA cleared or verified meaning there is no solid medical evidence to support the claims. Hope that helps. READ MORE

  • How can I find out if I am allergic to any medicines?

If you have never had an adverse reaction to medications that the proper way of answering the question is "I have no know drug allergies", There are no screening tests to check for such allergies - there are some tests and investigations we can do as allergists to see if a reaction to a medications (once already occurred) is of an allergic nature or not. Most reactions to medications are not allergic in nature though they do happen so if there ever is a reaction a consultation with an allergist will be appropriate. READ MORE

  • Is there more than one type of allergy test?

Yes, there are several ways to test for allergies and the most appropriate test is usually based on several factors. Some of those factors are the types of the reaction, the suspected trigger and history of the patient, current medications they are on, risks/benefits of the test to name a few. This is a complicated discussion that will be most appropriately had with your allergies during a formal consultation. The physician will choose the proper test based on your presentation. READ MORE

  • Can a 3 year old take zyrtec?

Yes, long acting antihistamines such as Zyrtec and Claritin can safely be used for very young children. I suggest discussing your specific dosing questions with your pediatrician - they can instruct you on the proper doses for general allergic rhinitis symptoms and also for use in acute more severe allergic reactions such as food anaphylaxis. READ MORE

  • How can I improve my son's immunity during the rainy season?

Unfortunately there isn't anything specific that you can do about that. Practicing the general rules for healthy living such as plenty of sleep, balanced diet and daily exercise apply in any situation where we want to keep the immune system functioning properly. READ MORE

  • Why do I keep coughing with my AC on in my room?

I would advise that you see an allergist. This is a common presentation that we see and investigation for allergies and potentially asthmatic like response to either cold air or allergens released by the AC is certainly very reasonable. READ MORE

  • Can lack of vitamin D make my child weaker and more susceptible to infections?

Vit. D deficiency by itself cannot be responsible solely for increased susceptibility to infections. While any vit. deficiency can potentially adversely affect the immune system and once identified should be treated appropriately it should not be viewed as an easy answer or a reason for increased rates of infection. I would advise working with your child's pediatrician on correcting the deficiency and making sure proper work up is done should they have issues with frequent infections. READ MORE

  • Does milk improve immunity?

Cow's milk will not have an impact on your child's immunity in a positive or negative way. Drinking cow's milk is not a necessity for any human being and as long as your child consumes variety of foods that provide him or her with protein, fat and calcium they will be just fine. Yogurt is another dairy food that is healthy because it is rich in probiotics - just avoid the ones with too much sugar. READ MORE

  • My baby has rashes on his hands. Could it be due to his vaccine?

Highly unlikely that the rash has anything to do with the vaccines. Around that age is when babies can develop eczema which is a common infant rash. Or this could be some other rash. I would suggest checking with the pediatrician if you are concerned. READ MORE

  • Can an inhaler help me treat my allergies?

An inhaler will not directly treat your allergies but it can help with the sensation/symptom of breathlessness. When allergies are fairly intense sometimes they can cause that sensation and the inhaler will releave it. However, I do advise you seeing an allergist if that is the case - a lot of patients have allergic asthma that presents only when their allergies are active and the specialist will be able to evaluate and treat you best to prevent issues in the future. • What is the cure for tiny reddish spots on my throat?

Without a visual inspection of the lesions and getting detailed history I cannot directly answer this question. In terms of "cure" in the purest sense of the word if it is related to sensitivity to tomatoes then stopping to eat tomatoes should eliminate the issue. If it is not related then you will likely not see an improvement or resolution. You may want to have either your MD or dentist have a look in your throat and give you more suggestions. READ MORE

  • Is it allergies or coronavirus?

The best thing to do is discuss this with your primary physician. READ MORE

  • I have an allergic rash on the head of my penis. What could it be?

I am not sure if the rash you are referring to is truly allergic in nature or why do you think it is allergic vs. infectious or irritation type. In situations like this esp. when a rash is present and the location is concerning the best approach is not to use a forum like this for medical care. Someone - a medical provider - needs to perform a proper exam and determine what type of rash this is and rule out potentially dangerous issues/infections, etc. I strongly advise you to seek medical care in person. • I have noticed loose stools every time I eat watermelon. What could be the reason?

I am not sure - could be digestion issue, the way your body processes the fructose in the fruit, etc. It is not a sign of an allergic reaction for sure so you can still continue to consume it. If it makes you too uncomfortable then switching to other fruits is also an option. READ MORE
